Use Wordle To Conduct Online Research On Who Does What (Including Yourself)

By alik levin
“What do you do?” is becoming an obsolete question and soon it’ll be completely removed from the day-to-day use. The reason is that everyone has online presence - either minimal membership on a social web site like Facebook or a full blown web blog. image

I like this transparency (despite my software security background). I actually massively use it when I research others. I also use it when doing research on myself.

Recently I discovered www.wordle.net that helps analyzing words on the web sites. It creates word clouds. A  word cloud is a great way to visually demonstrate the focus of the web site, it also helps demonstrating the lack of focus…

PracticeThis.com

I have ran it on this blog - www.PracticeThis.com. It’s clear I have been focused on Consulting recently:

Practice This Word Cloud

I thought this is a good time to step back and reflect on what I publish here. It’s time to reflect on my main categories which are:

I’ve tried this technique on blogs I like reading with the following results:

JD at www.SourcesOfInsight.com is focused on Problems solving. He seem to be in the Know about getting Results, and that is by asking the right Questions:

I apologize if I have not included your blog - nothing personal, I love reading your blog.

I am curious about your techniques for online research?

That’s an interesting tool. New to me. My two latest post registered big on that scale. And it’s a smart to move to avoid discussing politics and religion :)

That’s fascinating–thanks for pointing us to it. I hadn’t heard of it before. Mine was a little funky in terms of what came up but it gave me good food for thought!

WOW. This is fascinating. I was getting ready to head over to wordle and see what it would say about my site and then I saw that you’d already ran Writing Forward through it :) Hehee.

Anyway, what I found interesting was the emphasis on characters because I actually don’t have that many posts on character writing, and I would have expected to see some other words with greater emphasis.

What I’m thinking is that wordle looks specifically at the most recent posts (since I focused on characters last month). I’ll have to go play with it a bit. Very interesting and I love the images it creates.

Worlde is fun and I like your rundown and live examples.

If I were to mash up ideas on my blog, I wonder what I might end up with manually.

What’s interesting in looking at the auto-mash up is it sort of seems like the fortune cookie effect.

Gennaro,
I like it too, i like visualizing stuff.

Christine,
I am happy to hear it is of help. ;)

Melissa,
I love the images it creates too. I also think it is biased toward the latest posts, anyway it is fun and i like it ;)

JD,
HA, liked how you put it - “fortune cookie”. Nevertheless it shows blog’s recent focus - you results, gennaro - paris, melissa - writing, giovanna - action, liara - spiritual, and jimmy - performance. I think it is pretty correct ;)

That was really really cool! My biggest word is NOW, so I guess I must possess the power of now with in me!
