Success and the Subtle Something

Success is defined as how much we triumph and prosper in fame, fortune or happiness, while we are travelling on our lifelong Journey, even though we may face obstacles and adversity.

Success in life is not a destination; it is a part of the Journey.

How To Measure Success

“The standard of success in life is not the money or the stuff - the standard of success is absolutely the amount of joy you feel”.

What Does Success Mean to You?

Realize that ‘successful’ is not something that we do, it’s something we become. First we become successful on the inside, in our minds, and then we can become successful on the outside.

Thanks for including my definition! I don’t think success is static, though it may involve reaching a particular goal. But real success doesn’t stay there, it finds new goals and moves on.

Ruth,
Good point.

My good friend says “you either grow or die, there is no in-between” which I like a lot and which resonates a lot with your comment, isn’t it? ;)

#3 J.D. Meier on 01.28.09 at 3:00 pm

I guess the way to put it is, success isn’t static.

I’m also seeing that success is a numbers game and luck (where luck is when skill meets opportunity). I’m a fan of skilled living.

Hey Alik, great collection of real world definitions of success. There is a lot of insight readily available to all of us on blogs these days, as you have just demonstrated. By collecting that wisdom and posting it in one place, you create a valuable resource, thanks.

Thanks for including us. And those stage names my brother came up with are sure to create many opportunities for aspiring artists.

I’m interested, what is your definition of success Alik?

Great topic and idea to collate some thoughts around the blogosphere.

Ruth, meet JD!
It is good to hang with like-minded ;)

Jonathan,
Thanks for good words - may be I am on my way to crack the secret of successful blog? What do you say? ;) ;)

Bamboo Forest,
No probs! - welcome. Thanks for adding value to the post by your insights.

Juliet,
My definition of success? I adopted it from John Wooden - it is the last quote in the post - like it? ;)

Success in blogging doesn’t come easily, but it sure is rewarding. Success is different for each blogger, depending on his or her goals. For me, success has come by meeting lots of wonderful people (and writers) and learning along the way what I want to write about and how I want to write it.

#9 alik levin on 01.28.09 at 8:48 pm

Melissa,
Good insight - I like your view on success in blogging.

I am super successful blogger since I have so much joy doing it - nothing can compare with it (except my family). It gives me peace of mind …. seen Wooden definition for success? Love it!

#10 tom on 01.28.09 at 10:01 pm

this may sound weird, but why do so many people associate success with money?

#11 alik levin on 01.29.09 at 4:49 am

tom,
i think it is fine since it is *their* definition for success. Money might give you freedom…. or slavery…. ;(
I think it all boils down to where people stay wrt Maslow pyramid, here is what I have just seen on Twitter:
“There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread” - i think money for them is a huge success…..

#12 tom on 01.29.09 at 5:19 am

You make a good point Alik, it depends where people are.

Maybe it’s me but I also believe that we should always be striving to become greater, I think that is what success is.

I mean it kind of sucks if you say become a millionaire and stop their because you achieved success.

#13 Barbara Swafford on 01.29.09 at 7:10 am

Hi Alik - As I was reading these I was trying to pick a favorite, but they’re all good, and….they and your question got me thinking. I like when that happens. :)

#14 alik levin on 01.29.09 at 8:34 am

Barbara,
Great to hear it moved you ;)
It might be a good sign for my efforts - my ultimate goal to make others practice this :)
Am I on track?…..

#15 Giovanna Garcia on 01.29.09 at 8:56 am

Success is a feeling that I get.
When I know that I did the best I possibly can with what I got.

Great post, I enjoy reading it.
Thanks,

I enjoyed the research you did here. Great idea for a round up on what success means to the various personal development writers and bloggers!!

#17 alik levin on 01.29.09 at 9:36 am

Giovanna,
You rephrase John Wooden’s definition for success which is my favorite ;) - see the last quote in the post.

Evelyn,
Thanks for encouragement!

Stumbled! One of my favorite quotes about success comes from the book Think and Grow Rich…

“Success comes to those who become success conscious.”

#19 alik levin on 01.30.09 at 4:52 am

Stacy!
Thanks for the stumble ;)
Good quote - guess one needs to make sure to not become success obsessed ,eh? ;)

#20 Ted Bagley on 01.30.09 at 7:24 pm

I like a Samuel Beckett paraphrase, ” Success is failing better next time.”

#21 alik levin on 01.30.09 at 8:02 pm

Ted,
Ha! Ha! - loved that. But what’s Success anyway?

#22 Ted Bagley on 01.31.09 at 1:33 am
